Car Shipping from Japan to UK

Car shipping from Japan to UK is one of the most rewarding moves a car enthusiast can make. Whether you’re chasing a Nissan Skyline, a pristine Toyota Supra MK4, or a low-mileage Mazda RX-7 FD, the journey from a Japanese auction house to your driveway involves more than just booking a ship. It takes the right shipping agent, the right method, and someone who actually knows what they’re doing at every step.

Ascope Shipping has handled car shipping from Japan to UK for over 15 years, with more than 14,000 vehicles shipped worldwide and a 4.6-star Trustpilot rating. We have managed hundreds of JDM imports, navigated every UK port, handled every customs form, and solved every problem that can arise between a Yokohama auction and your front door. From RoRo booking and CEPA duty to NOVA, IVA, and DVLA registration, we manage the whole journey so you don’t have to.

Why Import a Car from Japan to the UK?

Japan’s domestic car market is unlike anything else in the world. The combination of strict annual roadworthiness tests (Shaken), low annual mileages, and meticulous owner care means Japanese used cars arrive in extraordinary condition. You’ll regularly find vehicles with under 30,000 miles, a full service history, and zero corrosion at prices well below comparable UK stock.

Beyond condition, Japan offers models you simply cannot buy here. The Toyota GR86, Suzuki Jimny JB74, Honda NSX, Mitsubishi Evo, and iconic JDM classics like the Subaru Impreza STI and Toyota Land Cruiser are all available at Japanese auctions for a fraction of their UK equivalents, when you can find them at all.

For UK buyers, car shipping from Japan to UK has never been more accessible or more cost-effective, especially in 2026, with the UK-Japan CEPA trade deal now delivering 0% import duty on qualifying Japanese-origin vehicles.

Two Ways to Ship a Car from Japan to the UK

Choosing the right shipping method is the first real decision, and it affects your cost, your timeline, and the level of protection your vehicle receives.

RoRo Car Shipping from Japan to UK

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipping is the most popular method for car shipping from Japan to UK, and for good reason. Your vehicle is driven onto a purpose-built car carrier vessel at a Japanese port, typically Yokohama or Nagoya, secured on a dedicated car deck, and driven off at the UK destination port.

RoRo is faster, cheaper, and perfectly safe for the vast majority of standard and performance vehicles. It’s the method Ascope Shipping recommends for most JDM imports.

Best for: Daily drivers, performance cars, most personal imports, buyers on a budget.

Container Car Shipping from Japan to UK

With container shipping, your car is loaded into a sealed steel shipping container, either a 20ft sole-use container or shared inside a 40ft container with other vehicles. The container is then locked, sealed, and loaded onto a cargo vessel.

Container shipping offers complete weather protection, salt-air isolation, and the option to pack personal items or spare parts alongside the vehicle. It’s the preferred method for rare classics, restored vehicles, high-value JDM icons, or any car where cosmetic condition is everything.

Best for: Classic cars, luxury vehicles, restored JDM icons, multi-car shipments.

RoRo vs Container Shipping

For the majority of Japan to UK vehicle shipping, RoRo delivers the best balance of speed, cost, and safety. If you’re shipping a Nissan Skyline, Honda NSX, or Mazda RX-7, container shipping gives that extra peace of mind.

Import Tax, VAT & the 2026 CEPA Trade Deal

This is where many importers get caught out. Understanding the UK’s tax position on Japanese cars in 2026 could save you thousands.

Standard Import Duty: 10% of the vehicle’s customs value.

CEPA Preferential Rate (2026): 0% for qualifying Japanese-origin vehicles. To benefit, the vehicle must meet the rules of origin under the UK-Japan CEPA, and your exporter must provide a valid Statement on Origin. Most genuine JDM vehicles qualify, but this is not automatic. Declare incorrectly and you’ll pay the standard 10%.

VAT: 20% is applied to the CIF value, that’s the car’s purchase price, plus shipping cost, plus insurance. VAT applies regardless of CEPA status. There is no exemption unless you’re importing under Transfer of Residence Relief.

IVA Test Costs: Vehicles registered in Japan less than 10 years ago require an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test from a DVSA-approved centre. Fees range from £199 (standard hours) to £294 (outside standard hours). Vehicles over 10 years old skip IVA entirely.

The DVLA Registration Process for Japanese Imports

Once your vehicle clears UK customs and passes its IVA or MOT, you’re ready to register with the DVLA. This is the final step before your car is legal to drive on UK roads.

Ascope Shipping guides every client through this entire process. We handle the NOVA filing, advise on IVA preparation, and make sure your customs declaration is structured correctly to claim CEPA preference where applicable.
